Listowel Celtic 0 Park 8
A comprehensive win for the Park but it must be acknowledged that Listowel Celtic were well under strength. The game was played on a beautiful sunny afternoon with the Celtic pitch in excellent condition which in turn helped the flow of the game.
Playing with a strong wind in the first half Park dominated the early exchanges but it took almost twenty minutes for the opening goal to materialise. Sean O’Connor got the first of his brace following good work from Chirwa and Cooney.
The second goal three minutes later was as a result of excellent link up play between Doody and Chirwa. Doody’s slide rule pass brilliantly put Chirwa through for an emphatic finish.
A fine ball from Kieran OConnor put Chirwa free a few minutes later and he crossed for Cianan Cooney to calmly finish despite Jack Moloney’s best efforts.
Chirwa’s persistence set up Seán O’Connor ten minutes before half time following a cross by Seán O’Connell.
Four nil at half time was probably fair but the wind had played a big part in the game.
Luckily for Park it eased somewhat in the second half and two more goals from Messiah and one each from Samuel Aladesanusi and Cillian Murphy meant Park had an easier day than they might have had if Listowel had all their players available.
It’s usually the goal scorers that hog the headlines after such a win but Listowel may also have had more joy on another day if the Park back five weren’t as good as they were. A fine team effort overall.
Speaking of team efforts, a special mention must go to Padraig McCannon and Danny Diggins who have been doing some excellent coaching sessions with the boys.
Big few weeks ahead now for this team and this was certainly a good way start it off.
